
How can performing arts help make science learning more engaging, creative and experiential? This question is addressed by the new publication “Embodied STEAM Methodology: Facilitator Guidelines”, developed as part of Activity 2 of the European project Dancing with STEAM.
The document presents an innovative pedagogical framework that connects performing arts practices with STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), providing youth workers, educators and non-formal education practitioners with practical tools to explore scientific concepts through movement, experimentation and collective reflection.
The methodology was developed and tested during the project Study Visit in Marseille, which involved facilitators from partner organisations across Europe. During the training, participants experimented with interdisciplinary approaches that use movement, participatory theatre and artistic composition to make complex scientific phenomena visible and understandable.
The guidelines demonstrate how learning can go beyond theoretical explanations and become experiential and participatory, allowing participants to observe scientific principles through physical exploration and artistic practices.

The five learning modules explore themes related to biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and ethical reflection, demonstrating how movement and participatory theatre can help participants observe forces, patterns, transformations and systems in action.
The publication is designed to be accessible and adaptable for youth workers, even for facilitators without previous experience in dance or theatre. The methodology provides clear guidance to support the implementation of creative STEAM learning activities in youth work and non-formal education contexts.
By positioning the body as a laboratory and theatre as a space for experimentation, the Dancing with STEAM approach encourages young people to explore science not only intellectually but also creatively, collaboratively and critically.
