After five weeks of challenges, reflections and concrete action, the Italian journey of EcoHeroes – Join the Plastic-Free Revolution has come to an end. Coordinated by FICUS ETS, this Erasmus+ project engaged adults in a gamified experience aimed at reducing plastic pollution. Through five progressive EcoMissions, participants transformed small everyday gestures into concrete actions for the environment, demonstrating that change can begin with each of our daily habits.
The entire journey was designed to guide participants gradually, from simply observing their environmental impact to carrying out awareness-raising activities within their communities. Each mission introduced a new challenge, progressively increasing the level of engagement and turning awareness into sustainable behaviour.
The first EcoMission, The Plastic Diary, invited participants to document all the single-use plastic items they used during an ordinary day. This simple yet highly effective activity helped them realise how much plastic unconsciously enters their daily lives.
With the second mission, The Label Hunt, the focus shifted to microplastics hidden in personal care products. By analysing product labels and using the Beat the Microbead app, participants learned to identify often unfamiliar ingredients that can have a significant impact on the environment.
The third challenge, The Weekly Swap, marked the first real change in habits: replacing a single-use plastic item with a reusable or sustainable alternative. This small action demonstrated that change does not necessarily require major sacrifices, but can begin with a simple everyday choice.
During The Market Challenge, the fourth EcoMission, the EcoHeroes left their homes to rediscover the value of local markets. They shopped while using as little plastic as possible and embraced long-standing traditions that represent a more sustainable model of consumption.
The journey concluded with The Creative EcoHero, a final mission that combined environmental action, creativity and awareness-raising. Participants collected plastic waste from the environment, transformed it into new objects through upcycling activities and shared their experiences with friends and family, becoming true ambassadors for change.
A journey that rewarded commitment
The five EcoMissions involved 18 Italian participants, who accumulated points week after week based on the quality of the activities completed, the creativity they demonstrated and the environmental impact they generated.
The final results reflect a level of participation that exceeded expectations.
🏆 13 participants earned the Platinum EcoHero badge
🥇 4 participants received the Gold EcoHero badge
🥈 1 participant achieved the Silver EcoHero badge
Particularly significant was the 50-point bonus awarded to everyone who successfully completed all five EcoMissions within the established deadlines. This recognition rewarded not only the quality of the evidence submitted, but above all the consistency and dedication demonstrated throughout the entire journey.
The highest score recorded in the Italian ranking was 535 points, followed by 497, 482, 475 and 471 points. Several participants even exceeded 100% of the baseline maximum score, demonstrating an extraordinary level of engagement and the high quality of the activities they completed.
Numbers that tell a story of change
Behind every score lies much more than a ranking: there are hundreds of concrete actions.
During the five weeks, the EcoHeroes learned to critically examine their consumption habits, identify microplastics in everyday products, replace single-use materials with sustainable alternatives, rediscover the value of local and plastic-free shopping, collect waste from the environment and transform it into new creations through creative recycling.
The photographs, videos, personal reflections and handmade objects documented an authentic journey of personal and environmental growth. They demonstrated how sustainability can become an integral part of everyday life when it is introduced through engaging and participatory activities.
Gamification, which lies at the heart of the EcoHeroes project, once again confirmed its effectiveness in transforming simple activities into educational experiences capable of fostering motivation, collaboration and concrete behavioural change.
The journey continues
The Italian ranking represents an important milestone, but it is not the final destination of the project.
The international ranking results will be published in the coming weeks. These will compare the Italian EcoHeroes with participants from the other partner countries involved in the Erasmus+ project, allowing us to discover how our participants performed at European level.
Regardless of the final results, the project has already achieved its greatest success: building a community of more aware and responsible citizens who are ready to play their part in reducing plastic pollution.
Keep following EcoHeroes!
The project will continue with new activities, workshops, events and updates dedicated to sustainability and the circular economy.
