From May 26th to 30th, 2025, Palermo was the vibrant setting of an enriching international training experience, as FICUS ETS hosted 11 Spanish teachers from both public and private VET (Vocational Education and Training) institutions located across various regions and cities in Spain.
A Multilevel Training Combining Formal and Non-Formal Education
The training program was designed on multiple levels, blending formal and non-formal education methods to foster exchange, collaboration, and the sharing of good practices among professionals in the VET sector.
The first day began with ice-breaking activities followed by a networking session, where participants had the opportunity to present their organizations and share their missions, experiences, and educational approaches. A session followed in which participants analyzed the European system of vocational education and training, comparing the Italian and Spanish models. The group then worked on describing their vision of the “ideal VET system”, gathering and synthesizing best practices from both national and European contexts.
Connecting VET Education with the Local Context
On the second day, after visiting another educational and social organization based in Palermo, the group explored the cultural and historical beauty of the city, linking the experience to education and tourism. The connection between territorial development and professional training was highlighted, emphasizing the potential of tourism and cultural heritage as powerful tools in VET programs.
The third day was dedicated to a visit to the Marco Polo Technical Institute for Tourism. The school principal and staff warmly welcomed the guests and provided a guided tour of the institute, explaining their educational offerings. Two students shared their personal experiences in international exchange programs and VET learning paths, giving an authentic insight into the Italian vocational system. A Q&A session allowed for mutual exchange and reflection.
Employment, Training, and Future Opportunities
The final day focused on the relationship between education, training, and the labor market, offering a comprehensive overview of existing skills gaps and discussing strategies to bridge them through cooperative, skill-oriented approaches.
The mobility concluded with a certificate ceremony, followed by a non-formal evaluation activity in which participants reflected on their experience and gave feedback. It was an emotional and inspiring moment, strengthening the sense of connection among all involved and paving the way for future international collaborations.
The experience left everyone with a deep sense of growth, inspiration, and the certainty that this is just the beginning of a long-term partnership across borders.
