On Sunday, May 17th, 2026, during the final day of the regional phase of the STEM Olympics, organized by the Department of Physics and Chemistry of the University of Palermo within the project “STEMpower: navigating towards the careers of the future”, an event of extraordinary scientific, educational, and human value took place.
During the session “STEMpower shares: curiosity bites from the STEM world”, the European Erasmus+ project STITCH – Sustainability Through Innovation, Training, Creativity & STEAM Horizons was presented with great enthusiasm and participation, demonstrating how science, sustainability, and creativity can come together to shape the world of tomorrow 💚♻️
Led by Prof. Dominique Persano Adorno, scientific coordinator of the initiative, and Dr. Enza Galati, both from the Department of Physics and Chemistry of the University of Palermo, around 50 students aged 16 to 18 from 8 Sicilian schools, together with their teachers and the UniPA staff, embarked on a fascinating journey into the heart of scientific research applied to sustainable fashion and innovative materials. The initiative also featured the participation of Prof. Nicola Pizzolato, Principal of ICS Maredolce in Palermo, an associated partner school of the STITCH project, coordinated by the University of Palermo.
Students discovered how Physics can transform a simple fabric into an intelligent technology capable of improving quality of life and protecting our planet.
Among the most inspiring topics explored:
biodegradable fibers obtained from agricultural waste and natural materials
- smart textiles capable of regulating temperature and humidity
- self-cleaning materials inspired by the Lotus effect
- radiation-shielding textiles against UV rays and X-rays
- nanotechnologies applied to sustainable and circular fashion
An engaging and inspiring experience that sparked curiosity, enthusiasm, and awareness among younger generations, showing in a concrete way how STEM disciplines can interact with creativity, design, and environmental sustainability.
The most powerful message that emerged from the event?
Fashion is not only aesthetics.
Fashion is science.
Fashion is innovation.
Fashion is sustainability.
Fashion can become a concrete tool to protect the planet and improve people’s lives.
The younger generations demonstrated strong interest, critical thinking, and the desire to imagine a more responsible future, where research, technology, and creativity can truly make a difference.
